The Atlanta Falcons' strategy this offseason has revolved around enhancing their defensive capabilities. Observers identified this need quickly after the conclusion of the 2024 season. The Falcons' defense ranked 23rd in total defense last season, recording a total of 31 sacks, placing them near the bottom of the league. Notably, the team has not been in the top half for sacks since 2017.

In response, the Falcons replaced defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake with Jeff Ulbrich. Ulbrich's previous tenure with the New York Jets saw significant defensive success, with the team ranking in the top five for total defense over the past three seasons and achieving respectable sack counts of 9th, 10th, and 12th from 2022 to 2024.

This coaching change marked the beginning of the Falcons' efforts. Following this, defensive focus was evident during the NFL Combine. General manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris were accompanied solely by defensive assistants. Of the 45 interviews held with prospects, all were concentrated on defensive players.

In free agency, the Falcons continued this trend. Of their 10 new signings, six were defensive, including Leonard Floyd, Divine Deablo, Morgan Fox, Jordan Fuller, Keith Taylor, and Mike Ford. Moreover, four of the 11 contract extensions were for defensive roles. In essence, defense accounted for 48% of the overall roster changes, surpassing offensive adjustments despite two special teams-focused transactions.

As free agency remains open, it is plausible that the Falcons might continue adding defensive talent. However, the upcoming NFL Draft, scheduled for April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, presents another opportunity. The team's focus during the combine suggests a leaning towards selecting defensive players, a sentiment echoed in various mock drafts.

Analysts and experts, including Falcons' senior content producer Tori McElhaney, indicate that the Falcons might select players such as Marshall's Mike Green, Michigan's Will Johnson, Jalon Walker, or Texas A&M's Shemar Stewart—all defensive options.

The coaching changes, free agency additions, and anticipated draft strategies underline the Falcons' belief that bolstering their defense is key to success in the upcoming season.
