The 2024 NFL season saw eight teams with first-year head coaches, including the Atlanta Falcons, who appointed Raheem Morris as their full-time head coach. Of these teams, only two made it to the playoffs. However, five of them managed to improve their overall records from 2023. Three teams did not see improvement, and as a result, two of those head coaches were dismissed from their positions.
The new league year is set to begin on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, marking an opportune moment to reflect on how these teams performed under new leadership last season.
Among the new appointments were Dave Canales with the Carolina Panthers in the NFC South and Dan Quinn with the Washington Commanders in the NFC East. Mike Macdonald took over at the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West, while Brian Callahan led the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South.
Jerod Mayo was appointed by the New England Patriots in the AFC East but was fired on January 5. Antonio Pierce headed up the Las Vegas Raiders in the AFC West until his dismissal on January 7. Jim Harbaugh stepped into a coaching role with the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West.
Despite varied outcomes for these first-year coaches, six remain in their positions moving into another season.
