The Atlanta Falcons are evaluating their options for enhancing their pass rush as they enter the offseason. While Arnold Ebiketie's late-season performance and Bralen Trice's potential offer some promise, the team is still in need of additional resources to bolster their defensive line.

General Manager Terry Fontenot has a track record of identifying cost-effective players in free agency. Among the candidates for this role is Chase Young, a former No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by Washington. Young was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and selected for the Pro Bowl during his debut season, thanks to an impressive tally of 7.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and a touchdown.

However, Young has not been able to replicate his initial success fully, which may make him an affordable option with potential upside for Atlanta. Last year he signed a one-year contract worth $13 million with the New Orleans Saints that was structured over several years to remain budget-friendly.

Though he didn't start any games for New Orleans in 2024, Young played a significant situational role on their defensive line and performed effectively. According to Next Gen Stats, he finished sixth among all players with 73 pressures and had a "get-off" time tied for tenth among edge defenders with at least 400 pass rush snaps.

Despite recording only 5.5 sacks last season—a key statistic for pass rushers—Young might still have a reasonable market value that could interest the Falcons.

Adding an experienced player like Young could be advantageous for Atlanta's defense. At just 26 years old during the upcoming season and having five years of NFL experience under his belt, he would be expected to serve as at least a quality situational rusher alongside Ebiketie.

The Falcons also have opportunities to strengthen their defensive front through this year's NFL Draft class, which features highly rated defensive linemen. The team holds pick No. 15 and may find another top talent available when they are on the clock.

Chase Young's familiarity with different defenses—from Ron Rivera’s system to those in San Francisco and New Orleans—makes him well-suited for Atlanta’s versatile defense approach this season. His connection with Assistant General Manager Kyle Smith from their time together in Washington adds further intrigue.

While this year's pool of free-agent edge rushers lacks star power compared to previous years', finding someone who fits within Atlanta's scheme remains crucial: “Young hasn't been the game-wrecking player draft pundits tabbed him to be," but there is belief that "he's still a very good player whose best football may be ahead of him.”
