The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly re-signing cornerback Mike Hughes. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the new contract for Hughes is set for three years and valued at $18 million.
Hughes joined the Falcons in 2023 with a two-year deal. During his first year, he started four out of 15 games. In his second year, he started all 15 games he played, securing a larger role within the team and apparently earning a future with them.
Over the past two seasons, Hughes has accumulated 87 tackles, six for a loss, and seven pass breakups. Before joining Atlanta, Hughes played for the Minnesota Vikings (2018-20), Kansas City Chiefs (2021), and Detroit Lions (2022). Across these teams, he made 18 starts in 57 games—fewer than his 19 starts over two years with the Falcons.
Hughes' career includes three interceptions, with the most recent in 2021 while playing for Kansas City. He also has seven forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries in total but none during his time in Atlanta.
Looking ahead to 2025, Hughes is expected to continue as a starting cornerback alongside A.J. Terrell unless new additions change this setup. General Manager Terry Fontenot has emphasized adding players who can enhance the team’s performance. Last offseason, Terrell signed a four-year extension that keeps him with the Falcons through at least 2028.
Of the 30 Falcons players approaching free agency when the league year begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, Hughes is reportedly among those returning to Atlanta next season. Long snapper Liam McCullough's contract was extended last Thursday.
