The Atlanta Falcons are currently not making any changes regarding quarterback Kirk Cousins' future with the team. During the 2025 NFL Combine, Falcons General Manager Terry Fontenot addressed questions about Cousins' contract status. Despite being a backup to Michael Penix Jr., Cousins occupies 14% of the team's salary cap.
Fontenot stated, "We understand that it's not ideal to have a quarterback at that cap number. Now, when we gave him that contract, the expectation was for him to be the starter at this point, and so that is a good number for a starting quarterback. But now that he's the backup, when we say we're comfortable, we're talking about the total funds allocated to the quarterback position."
The Falcons appear to accept Cousins' current contract as a sunk cost unless they decide to trade him and save money. The no-trade clause in his contract complicates this option but does not make it impossible.
With the new league year starting on March 12, there is still time for potential changes in Cousins' role with the team. Fontenot commented, "Whether it's Kirk Cousins or any other player, we have to really look at how is this going to help our team and how is this going to affect the Atlanta Falcons."
