Leigh Lewis | Douglas County Correctional Officer
Leigh Lewis, a Douglas County Correctional Officer, was arrested on July 13th, 2022 for violation of oath by a public officer and sexual assault by correctional employee. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office officials received a letter, written by an inmate housed in the Douglas County Jail, alleging that Officer Lewis was sexually involved with another inmate at the jail. Sheriff Tim Pounds instructed his investigators to conduct a criminal investigation into the matter. Upon reviewing video of the inmate’s housing unit, investigators were able to corroborate information we had received. Lewis was interviewed by investigators and admitted that she had in fact kissed and performed oral sodomy on an inmate in custody. She was arrested and appeared before Judge Barbara Caldwell this morning in Magistrate Court, where she received a $30,000 bond.
Officer Lewis had worked for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for a little over a year, initially as a dispatcher and then transferring to the Jail Division. Sheriff Tim Pounds said, “When my officers do right, are within the law and my policy, I will stand by their side and fight with them all the way. I will not cave to political pressure or a court of public opinion. However, if one of them knowingly and willfully violates the law, and the public’s trust, this is what is going to happen to them. I have many great officers and I’m not going to allow one bad apple to spoil the bunch.”
