County of Douglas issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.
As the State of Georgia reported its deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic so far on Saturday, September 18, 2021, Douglas County Government took a new approach to get more of its residents vaccinated on the same day.
Outside of the Douglas County Courthouse was a tent-filled parking lot of vendors, civic organizations, entertainment, and County departments during the Annual September Saturdays community event. Inside the Courthouse in Citizens’ Hall was a half dozen nurses from Cobb & Douglas Public Health who vaccinated willing residents against the deadly virus. The added bonus for getting the COVID-19 vaccine was a $100 Visa Gift Card courtesy of Douglas County Government, and its allotment of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds.
“This year’s event was perhaps the most important September Saturdays we have ever done in the County,” says Chairman Dr. Romona Jackson-Jones. “The fact that we reached over half of our day one vaccination goal is proof that having an in-person event was the right thing to do, especially since we see the COVID-19 positivity rate rising in the state.”
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 9,490 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. In the week leading to Douglas County’s September Saturdays’ community event, less than half of Douglas County residents were fully vaccinated. County leadership decided to offer the monetary incentive for the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines with the hope of improving its vaccination rate.
County Administrator Sharon D. Subadan expressed, “We will not let up on our mission to get as many County residents as possible vaccinated. The monetary incentive is simply a gesture because we realize that possibly helping to save a life is priceless.”
The second September Saturday event is Saturday, September 25th at the County Courthouse from 11:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Eligible 12 and older participants must verify that they are a Douglas County resident, are not fully vaccinated, and give permission for verification of their Georgia Immunization Record. Parental or guardian permission is required for 12-17 years old. Residents can register at douglasvax.coreresponse.org.
