Michael Penix Jr., the Atlanta Falcons’ new starting quarterback, is making efforts to connect with his teammates in various ways, including engaging in activities like golfing and fishing. As the team enters Organized Team Activities (OTAs), Penix’s leadership role has become more prominent compared to last year when he was a backup.

Wide receiver Darnell Mooney highlighted Penix’s preference for hip-hop music, joking about their differing musical tastes. “He has just one brand, and it’s hip-hop,” Mooney said. Penix acknowledged this light-heartedly: “I listen to it. But in the back of my head, I’m probably like, ‘Turn it off.'”

Penix understands the importance of building relationships with all team members. “I feel like you can’t lead nobody whenever you don’t know them,” he stated. He aims to understand each teammate’s preferred leadership style.

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris appreciates Penix’s approach. “I definitely like his approach,” Morris commented. He praised Penix for his ability to motivate the team and reflect on improvements.

During OTAs, Penix experienced some shaky moments but showed resilience by maintaining composure despite challenging weather conditions. Falcons safety Jessie Bates III noted Penix’s poise: “I’ve never seen Mike get overwhelmed.”

Penix was drafted by Atlanta as the No. 8 overall pick last year and became the starter after veteran Kirk Cousins was benched in Week 16. Coach Morris observed that Penix is developing confidence in his role: “He’s finding his voice.”
