The NFL made an announcement on Tuesday regarding nine procedural adjustments that will take effect in the 2025 season. These changes emerged from the Annual League Meeting, held in Palm Beach, Florida, attended by both league coaches and owners. The NFL’s Competition Committee proposed these adjustments, and for their adoption, a minimum of 75% (24 out of 32) of the clubs voted in favor.
Rich McKay, CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment and chairman of the NFL Competition Committee, played a significant role in the decision-making process. He stated the updates will indeed affect every team, including the Atlanta Falcons.
The new rules approved under the “Playing Rules Summary” include adjustments to the free kick play rule, aligning postseason and regular season overtime rules, and expanding Instant Replay’s advisory role. Specifically, the overtime rules will now allow both teams to possess the ball regardless of the outcome of the first possession, with regular season games maintaining a 10-minute overtime.
In the “Bylaws Summary,” there are changes including allowance for clubs to designate two players for return after roster reductions, and an increase in Designated For Return (DFR) slots for postseason clubs.
Under the “Resolutions Summary,” clubs gained the ability to engage in limited communications with prospective unrestricted free agents during the Two-Day Negotiation Period. Furthermore, certain clubs have been permitted to prepare kicking footballs pre-game day and given expanded scouting credentials for potential postseason play.
The amendments reflect the ongoing efforts by the league to maintain fair competition and ensure smooth gameplay across the NFL’s seasons.
