Michael Penix Jr., quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, displayed a different side of himself during a joint practice with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday. The incident occurred after Penix completed a deep touchdown pass to Ray-Ray McCloud in the first 11-on-11 period. Following the play, Penix exchanged words with the Tennessee sideline.

“I was somebody else,” Penix said of his headspace in the moment, “so I don’t even remember.”

The exchange led to a scuffle involving players from both teams, resulting in Penix and others ending up on the ground. Drake London was among the first to come to Penix’s defense and had his helmet removed during the altercation. Coaches and staff intervened to separate players and restore order. Tensions remained high as play resumed, with further exchanges between Chris Lindstrom, Kaleb McGary, and Titans linebacker Oluwafemi Oladejo.

The coaching staff decided to pull the first teams off the field and allowed second-team players to continue practice while emotions settled. Kirk Cousins led a successful drive for the second team following these events.

Quarterbacks coach D.J. Williams commented on Penix’s reaction: “At the end of the day, I always tell him that he’s the CEO of the offense,” Williams said. “You have to run the show. And, obviously, emotions get high and that’s football, right? We’re playing a competitive sport. It’s hot out here and a bunch of guys are fighting for their lives. But at the end of the day we always have to come back down and understand that we have to operate the offense because everybody relies on (the quarterback) to tell them the play, tell them what they are doing, come back down and do what we do.”

Penix reflected on his actions after practice: “Yeah, I am,” Penix said with a point. “That’s me.” He added that he is usually calm but acknowledged something changed when confronted by Tennessee players: “They probably don’t look at me like that,” Penix said. “But I’m from Tampa. Dade City.”

This episode highlighted an intense side of Penix not often seen since his early days playing football in Florida.
