Despite previous discussions about a potential trade, quarterback Kirk Cousins remains committed to the Atlanta Falcons. The 36-year-old athlete acknowledged having multiple conversations earlier this year about his future with the team. However, as the Falcons’ offseason program commenced in May, Cousins participated in the mandatory minicamp held in June.
“It’s no longer time to harp on those conversations. It’s time to look toward the future in Atlanta,” Cousins stated. He emphasized his focus on helping the team achieve success, saying, “Hopefully, in February, we – as an organization – are holding up the Lombardi Trophy.”
This season marks a change for Cousins as he transitions into a backup role behind Michael Penix Jr., differing from last year’s expectations. Originally signed by the Falcons in March 2024 to a four-year deal worth up to $180 million, Cousins was anticipated to be their starting quarterback for several seasons. However, performance issues and injuries led to his benching during Week 16 of last season. Consequently, Penix took over and started the final three games.
Falcons head coach Raheem Morris expressed confidence in both quarterbacks: “I’m really comfortable with Kirk because of who he is, his character, the person.” He noted that Cousins would do whatever it takes for the team’s success.
Penix appreciates learning from Cousins’ experience: “He knows how to operate an offense at a high level,” Penix said. “I feel like I learned a lot of that stuff from him.”
Cousins has embraced his mentorship role: “Michael is going to do great,” he said. “I’m just here to support him as he needs it.”
Both quarterbacks agree on their shared objective for the team: winning football games. As they continue with mandatory minicamp sessions, Penix currently holds the starting position.
Cousins expressed acceptance of his role and commitment to moving forward positively: “The key is that you don’t pout or stop,” he remarked.
