For the second consecutive year, the Atlanta Falcons have drawn significant attention during the NFL draft. This year’s spotlight was on their strategic move to acquire James Pearce Jr., an edge rusher from the University of Tennessee. The Falcons traded away their first-round pick in 2026, along with a second and seventh-round pick in this year’s draft, to secure Pearce at No. 26.

Falcons General Manager Terry Fontenot explained the decision-making process behind the trade: “You know with trades it always gets to that point where you have to weigh out what you’re actually doing and what you’re doing it for… When you have that kind of conviction and belief in the player, then that’s when you’re willing to do it — and we do.”

Pearce’s track record supports Atlanta’s confidence. He led the SEC with 107 pressures over two seasons and recorded 17.5 sacks. His performance at the NFL Combine included a notable 4.47-second time in the 40-yard dash, ranking him high among edge rushers.

Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich expressed his enthusiasm for Pearce: “If you looked at the best rushers in this draft, you could have made a case that he was the best one from a pure edge element.” The Falcons conducted thorough evaluations on Pearce both on and off-field before finalizing their decision.

Adding to their defensive lineup, Atlanta also signed veterans Leonard Floyd and Morgan Fox while drafting Jalon Walker as another edge prospect. Defensive Line Coach Nate Ollie highlighted their strategy: “Man, it’s getting like waves of pass rush… We talk about having no weak links and not missing a beat.”

Assistant General Manager Kyle Smith emphasized Pearce’s unique qualities: “What you’re going to see is speed… there is juice in his body and twitch and explosion instinct.” This speed is expected to enhance Atlanta’s ability to pressure quarterbacks without relying heavily on blitzes.

The Falcons’ proactive approach reflects their urgency in strengthening key positions as they aim for competitive success. As Ollie noted, “Putting a premium on pass rush and getting two pass rushers, that’s great.”
