The Atlanta Falcons improved their position in the NFC South by securing a 24-10 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 12. This victory marked the Falcons’ first divisional win of the season and allowed them to gain ground on both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers, who lost their respective games.
Following Week 12, the NFC South standings are as follows: Tampa Bay Buccaneers lead with a 6-5 record (2-0 in division), followed by the Carolina Panthers at 6-6 (2-1 in division), Atlanta Falcons at 4-7 (1-3 in division), and New Orleans Saints at 2-9 (1-2 in division).
In their most recent game, the Buccaneers lost 34-7 to the Los Angeles Rams. Running back Rachaad White was named offensive standout for his efficient play despite limited opportunities, while linebacker Yaya Diaby was noted for his defensive effort, recording three pressures and a sack. However, pass defense remains an area of concern as Tampa Bay has struggled to contain opposing quarterbacks, ranking near the bottom of the league in pass yards allowed per play and per game. Head coach Todd Bowles commented on his team’s current situation: “We’re pissed off. We got a bad taste in our mouth the last two weeks and we should be. We come home with a three-game home stand. Everything we need to do is right in front of us, but we have a lot of work to do.” The Buccaneers will next host the Arizona Cardinals.
The Carolina Panthers fell 20-9 to the San Francisco 49ers. Running back Rico Dowdle led offensively with solid production both on the ground and through receiving. Cornerback Jaycee Horn made two interceptions before leaving due to concussion protocol, helping keep Carolina competitive early on. The team’s lack of pass rush continues to be an issue; they remain last in NFL sacks this season after failing to bring down San Francisco’s quarterback once during Monday’s contest. Head coach Dave Canales stated: “Yeah, it’s just fundamentals. Fundamentals, execution, you know, it’s the little things. It’s making the completions, it’s the right throw, it’s catching the ball, doing all the little things right that I can count on these guys to do and making sure that shows up weekly.” The Panthers will face the Los Angeles Rams next.
For Atlanta’s part, quarterback Kirk Cousins was recognized as offensive standout after completing 70% of his passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns and one interception against New Orleans—his first start since Michael Penix Jr.’s injury placed him on injured reserve. On defense, cornerback Dee Alford stepped into a starting role following Billy Bowman Jr.’s Achilles injury and finished with ten tackles plus a fumble recovery. Despite these performances, kickoff coverage is highlighted as an area needing improvement after allowing a significant return by New Orleans’ Mason Tipton early in Sunday’s game. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris addressed his team’s emphasis on improving pressure: “Obviously sacks and pressures have been a big focus on our team … Over the last two years, since I’ve been here at least, being able to add people (in the draft) and free agency, whatever the case has been for me to get them in here, to rush the passer.” The Falcons are scheduled to play against the New York Jets next week.
The Saints’ loss dropped them further behind their divisional rivals despite wide receiver Chris Olave leading all receivers with nine catches for seventy yards from thirteen targets. Defensive end Cam Jordan managed both a sack and forced fumble but could not turn momentum for New Orleans’ benefit; red-zone inefficiency persisted as they scored only three points from two trips inside Atlanta’s one-yard line. Reflecting on his team’s performance versus expectations coming out of their bye week and previous win over Carolina, head coach Kellen Moore said: “Frustrating game, a game we felt good about coming in. We felt like there was some carryover from the Carolina game into the bye week. We felt like it was a good week. Then, we didn’t come out and get this one done. Credit to those guys. Those guys coached better, played better and ultimately executed better than us today.” Next up for New Orleans is an away game against Miami Dolphins.
