The Atlanta Falcons announced on Mar. 20 that they plan to expand the role of edge defender Jalon Walker in his second season, aiming to take advantage of his ability to play multiple positions on defense.
This development is significant as the Falcons look for ways to strengthen their defense following the departure of linebacker Kaden Elliss, who contributed both as an off-ball linebacker and a pass rusher last season. The team hopes Walker can fill a similar versatile role moving forward.
Walker was selected by Atlanta with the No. 15 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and made an immediate impact with 5.5 sacks during his rookie year, which ranked second among all rookies and third among Falcons defenders. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said, “I’ll say this, the vision for him is so much clearer in Year 2. He’s going to make huge strides this year in every way — from a pass rush perspective, a pure end perspective. But then also we’re going to start to also utilize his versatility off the ball and all the stuff he can do.” Walker’s experience at Georgia showcased his ability to line up at various spots on defense.
After being drafted, Walker said, “I’m doing whatever they want me to do… I played outside backer. I played inside backer. I played nickel. I played them all. But you know, whatever they need me to do, I will contribute to the biggest level they want me to be.” Head coach Kevin Stefanski added at his introductory press conference: “I think what you’ve seen Coach Brich do, what you’ve seen around the league with what teams are doing with these elite edge rushers, is really creating matchups.”
The Falcons compete in the National Football League’s NFC South division and are based in Atlanta, Georgia according to their official website. The franchise began as an expansion team in 1965 and has advanced twice to the Super Bowl—in both 1998 and 2016 according to their official website. Freddie the Falcon serves as their mascot according to their official website.
Ulbrich praised Walker’s character as well as his athletic abilities: “He’s obviously a talented football player, but as I’ve gotten to know him, the football character, and just the character in general, is off the charts,” Ulbrich said. “He’s a rare rookie where you can foresee a ‘C’ on his chest sooner than later.” As offseason preparations continue largely under players’ own direction due to league rules limiting direct coaching contact during this period, expectations remain high for further growth from Walker heading into next season.
