The Annual League Meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, saw the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach Raheem Morris and owner Arthur Blank address various team issues and strategies, including the future of quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Raheem Morris described the free agency period as “realistic” and outlined the current holding pattern regarding Cousins, suggesting a trade post-June 1 could be beneficial, although it requires several factors to align, including Cousins waiving his no-trade clause.
In regard to the Falcons’ center position, Morris expressed confidence in Ryan Neuzil stepping up after Drew Dalman’s departure, stating: “We had eight games that he was able to go out there and be competitive…we feel really good about what Neuzil can do.”
Additionally, the Falcons confirmed the re-signing of Mike Hughes, emphasizing his versatility in the secondary. Morris also discussed adjustments involving player Clark Phillips III, entrusting him with a focus on playing in the slot.
Morris explained the team’s relatively quiet approach in early free agency this year, noting the importance of strategic financial management: “You have to have a realistic approach to how you want to do it.”
The team is focusing on developing its young defensive core from the 2024 draft class, with an emphasis on defense for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft as confirmed by Blank: “The emphasis on the draft will certainly be on the defensive side of the ball.”
The release of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, a move considered emotionally challenging, was addressed by both Morris and Blank. Blank remarked, “Since Grady left I carry a handkerchief with me, so I can do this on a regular basis.”
Finally, addressing questions on management roles and longevity, Blank expressed his belief in maintaining continuity within the team’s leadership structure: “The most successful teams in the National Football League…are teams that have long-term sustainability between their coaches, their general managers and, usually, the right kind of quarterback.”
