The Atlanta Falcons ended a five-game losing streak with a win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The team relied on quarterback Kirk Cousins to provide stability after a challenging period that included two overtime losses and the season-ending injury of Michael Penix Jr.
Penix, who has now suffered three season-ending knee injuries in five years, is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery soon in Los Angeles. With his absence, the Falcons turned back to Cousins, who has shown both strong and weak performances since joining Atlanta.
In Sunday’s game, Cousins completed 16 of 23 passes and threw a key touchdown pass to Darnell Mooney in the fourth quarter. Despite one interception—on a throw that hit Kyle Pitts in the hands—Cousins managed the game efficiently and provided leadership on the field.
Head coach Raheem Morris noted adjustments made for Cousins: “We accommodated Kirk by utilizing more play-action and under-center looks.” Morris emphasized that Cousins’ ability to avoid mistakes was crucial: “Cousins didn’t get in the way of the game. He wasn’t a wrinkle that caused ripple effects throughout four quarters.”
Atlanta’s defense also played an important role in securing the victory. In the locker room after the game, Morris distributed game balls for the first time since Week 6. He welcomed inside linebacker Divine Deablo back from injured reserve and praised kicker Zane Gonzalez for making two field goals beyond 50 yards. Before those acknowledgments, Morris recognized Cousins by tossing him a game ball with two words: “Our quarterback,” said Morris as he handed it over.
For now, Cousins will continue leading Atlanta through the remainder of 2025 as they await Penix’s recovery.
