The Atlanta Falcons announced on Mar. 6 the hiring of Bill Callahan as their new offensive line coach, following the recent appointment of Kevin Stefanski as head coach. The decision to bring in Callahan was made less than three days after Stefanski joined the team, marking his first external hire for the coaching staff.

The move is part of a broader effort by Stefanski and general manager Ian Cunningham to strengthen both sides of the line and build a more physical football team. “Yeah, I think he’s the best in the business,” Stefanski said at the NFL Combine. “I’m biased, but if you watch what he’s done over the course of his career, I think the world of Bill.”

Callahan brings extensive experience to Atlanta, having started his coaching career in 1980 and working in various roles across college football and the National Football League (NFL). He has served as an offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and head coach during his tenure but has primarily focused on coaching offensive lines since joining the NFL in 1995. His previous collaboration with Stefanski began in 2020 when he was hired as Cleveland Browns’ offensive line coach. Under Callahan’s guidance, Cleveland improved its rushing offense significantly and maintained strong performance even after losing key players to injury.

Stefanski praised Callahan’s immediate impact on staff preparations: “Just wealth of knowledge, and just the experience that he has that he can draw upon when it comes to putting a run game plan together, putting a protection plan together and then ultimately getting the most out of your players.” He also highlighted Callahan’s skill in player development: “I think one of his superpowers is player development. I’ve seen him take players and turn them into All-Pros.”

Atlanta’s offensive line already features established talent such as right guard Chris Lindstrom—named second-team All-Pro for four consecutive seasons—and left tackle Jake Matthews. With starting right tackle Kaleb McGary set to return from injury next season, most core linemen remain under contract except Elijah Wilkinson. Last season, Atlanta averaged over 125 rushing yards per game—the eighth-best mark in the league—and allowed only 26 sacks.

The Falcons compete in the NFL’s NFC South division according to their official website. The team is based in Atlanta, Georgia according to their official website and began play as an expansion franchise in 1965 according to their official website. They have advanced to two Super Bowls—in 1998 and again in 2016 according to their official website. Freddie the Falcon serves as their mascot according to their official website.

As Callahan takes on this new role with an experienced group of linemen, expectations are high for continued improvement up front.
